Soothe. Calm. Heal.

Matricaria recutita is nature’s most beloved floral tonic — an apigenin-rich golden herb revered across centuries of traditional herbalism for its ability to quiet a busy mind, ease digestive tension, and invite the body into soft, restorative calm.

Why Chamomile Flowers?

  • Nervous system soother: Apigenin binds to receptors in the brain that promote relaxation, easing stress, irritability, and the restlessness of a long day — gently guiding the body toward stillness and peace.
  • Digestive comfort: Chamazulene and alpha-bisabolol relax the smooth muscle of the gut lining, easing bloating, gas, and tension — the classic post-meal settling tonic.
  • Restful sleep: Its antispasmodic and nervine action makes Chamomile the perfect evening ritual, preparing the body for deep, uninterrupted rest without sedation or heaviness.
  • Gentle & family-friendly: One of the safest and most universally tolerated botanicals — a trusted daily tonic for all ages, from children to the elderly.

Traditional Benefits

Matricaria recutita (German Chamomile) has been a staple in traditional wellness rituals for centuries. Its therapeutic strength lies in its delicate essential oils, which possess a unique ability to harmonise the body and mind. It is a true "demulcent" and "nervine," working to soothe tissues and settle the nervous system simultaneously.

Core Bioactive Markers:

  • Apigenin (Flavonoid): A powerhouse compound known for its ability to bind to receptors in the brain that promote relaxation and ease stress.
  • Essential Oils (Chamazulene & Alpha-Bisabolol): These provide the signature apple-like aroma and are highly valued for their anti-inflammatory and gut-soothing properties.
  • Mucilage: A natural, soothing substance that coats and calms the lining of the digestive tract.
  • Coumarins: Support the body’s natural relaxation response and contribute to the plant's overall gentle, harmonising effect.

Key Physiological Properties:

  • Nervine Relaxant: Helps to quiet the mind, ease irritability, and prepare the body for restful sleep.
  • Digestive Antispasmodic: Gently relaxes the smooth muscles of the stomach and intestines, providing relief from tension and indigestion.
  • Inflammation Modulator: Traditionally used to soothe "heat" in the body, whether it is in the gut or on the skin.
  • Holistic Balancer: By simultaneously calming the mind and the gut, Chamomile acts on the gut-brain axis, promoting a feeling of integrated wellness.

How To Use

  • How to Use: Because these are delicate flowers, they are best prepared as a short-steeped infusion. Use 1–2 tablespoons of flowers in 1 cup of hot water, covering the cup while it steeps for 5–8 minutes to ensure the volatile oils (the medicine!) stay in your cup rather than evaporating away.
  • The Ritual: Best utilised as a "Tranquility Ritual." Drinking Chamomile tea is an act of surrendering. It is a moment to "let go" of your posture, breathe deeply, and allow the gentle, floral warmth to signal to your body that it is time for softness, stillness, and rest.

Safety & Precautions

• Do not use if pregnant or lactating.
• Generally safe for all, though those with a severe allergy to the Asteraceae family (like ragweed) should exercise caution.
• Can interact with warfarin or other blood-thinning medication.
• Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
• Keep out of reach of children.
FAQs

Why cover the cup while it steeps?

The "medicine" of Chamomile is in its volatile, aromatic oils. If you leave the cup uncovered, those oils evaporate with the steam. Covering the cup keeps them in your tea!

Is this just for sleep?

While it is famous for sleep, it is a phenomenal digestive tonic. It is excellent to sip after dinner to help the body transition into a restful, digestive state.

Can I mix this with other herbs?

A: It is the ultimate "blending base." It pairs beautifully with Lemon Balm, Passionflower, or Lavender for a sophisticated, calming sleep blend.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HERBS

infusion

Infusion (The Gentle Extract)

Best For: Flowers, leaves, and aerial parts.
Method: Steeping in hot (not boiling) water.
Goal: Preserves delicate oils and nutrients.
Feel: Mild, aromatic, and nourishing.
Think of this as an elevated tea ritual. Because leaves and flowers are delicate, boiling them can damage their beneficial essential oils and volatile compounds.

The Method:
  • Pour hot (approx. 85°C–90°C) water over your herbs.
  • The Time: Cover and steep for 5–15 minutes. Covering is key—it prevents the plant's aromatic oils from escaping with the steam.
  • Best For: Chamomile, Lemon Balm, and delicate floral blends.

Cold infusions

Herbs best suited for cold infusions are those high in mucilage (like marshmallow root) or those with delicate, volatile oils (like peppermint and lemon balm). Steeping these in cold water overnight extracts their maximum benefits and flavours while preventing bitterness and preserving sensitive phytonutrients.

How to Prepare

Prep: Use a ratio of 1 tablespoon of dried herb (or 2 tablespoons fresh) per 1 cup of cold, filtered water.
Steep: Combine in a glass jar, cover tightly, and leave at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 6 to 12 hours (overnight is ideal).
Strain: Strain out the herbs thoroughly before drinking, warm water can be added to the drink if warm liquids is your preference. Do not heat in microwave.

decoction

Decoction (The Deep Extract)

Best For: Roots, bark, seeds, and woody stems.
Method: Simmering in water over heat.
Goal: Softens tough fibres to release compounds.
Feel: Concentrated, earthy, and potent.

How to Prepare (The "Simmer")

This is a more intensive process for tougher materials. Roots, barks, and woody seeds are "locked" behind dense cell walls; a simple soak isn't enough to get the goodness out.
The Method: Place your herbs in a pot with cold water. Slowly bring it to a gentle boil, then lower the heat and simmer.
The Time: Simmer for 15–20 minutes. Keep the lid on to maintain the potency.
Best For: Yellow Dock, White Willow Bark, Wild Yam, and woody roots or dense seeds.

Herbal Poultice

  • Place the recommended amount of dried herbs into a bowl.
  • Add just enough boiling water to moisten the herbs, creating a thick paste.
  • Allow the mixture to cool until it is comfortably warm (not hot enough to burn the skin).
  • Spread the herbs evenly onto a clean piece of muslin, gauze, or cotton cloth and fold the cloth over to enclose the herbs.
  • Apply the warm poultice directly to the affected area for 15–30 minutes, or as needed.
  • Remove the poultice and discard the used herbs. Prepare a fresh poultice for each application.

Helpful Tips
Do not apply to broken skin, open wounds, or infected areas unless advised by a qualified healthcare practitioner. If irritation occurs, discontinue use immediately.
