Soothe. Release. Balance.

Verbena officinalis (the Herb of Grace) is a verbenalin-rich bitter tonic traditionally used to soothe the nerves, ease physical tension held in the body, support the liver, and restore emotional and hormonal equilibrium.

Why Vervain?

  • Sublingual spark: Bitter compounds (verbenalin and hastatoside) work instantly on the tongue to stimulate digestive juices, settle the nervous system, and initiate a calming, grounding response throughout the body.
  • Physical relaxation: Traditionally used to ease tension held in the neck, shoulders, and jaw — especially when driven by mental stress or emotional overload — encouraging a soft, open, and released body.
  • Liver & hormonal support: A traditional favourite for supporting healthy liver function and promoting systemic balance during monthly cycles, helping the body process and clear hormonal metabolites.
  • Nervine restorative: Flavonoids and iridoid glycosides provide antioxidant protection for the nervous system, supporting long-term emotional resilience and calm, steady presence under pressure.

Traditional Benefits

Verbena officinalis is a botanical icon of European and Celtic folk herbalism, once considered a "holy herb" of protection and peace. Classified in traditional herbalism as "cooling, drying, and nervine-tonic," it is respected for its specific affinity with the nervous system and the tension patterns of the head and shoulders. It acts as a "de-tensioner," helping to resolve sensations of rigid-striving, mental-grinding, or "wired-overwhelm" with its crisp, cool, and liberating energy.

Core Bioactive Markers:

  • Verbenalin (Iridoid Glycoside): The "heart" of the Vervain. This complex compound is the primary agent traditionally linked to the herb's reputation for its ability to relax the nervous system and support healthy, fluid mental transitions.
  • Bitters: Offer a gentle, stimulating quality that helps "move" stagnant energy out of the digestive tract, ensuring the herb’s relaxing action is supported by internal rhythm.
  • Flavonoids: Provide broad, antioxidant-rich support, protecting tissues from the impact of chronic stress and supporting overall vitality.
  • Essential Oils: Contribute to the plant’s status as a well-rounded tonic, providing an aromatic quality that helps clear the head and lift the spirit.

Key Physiological Properties:

  • Nervous-System Relaxant: Traditionally used to help the body "down-regulate" from high-stress states, fostering a state of fluid, relaxed, and capable presence.
  • Tension-Dissipator: Helps to resolve the physical manifestations of stress—tight muscles, clenched jaws, and "knotted" shoulders—fostering a state of physical ease.
  • "Cooling" Ally: By dispelling heat and mental-friction, it helps to resolve "hot-tight" states, fostering a sense of crisp, clean, and balanced equilibrium.
  • Systemic Harmoniser: By relaxing and clearing, it helps to resolve "rigid-striving" states, encouraging a state of vibrant, calm, and fundamentally graceful equilibrium.

How To Use

  • Infusion: Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 - 3 teaspoons of herb. Infuse in a covered container for 10 - 15min. Strain and drink three times per day.
  • The Ritual: Best used as a "Release Ritual." Drinking Vervain is an act of deliberate surrender. It is a moment to stop "pushing" against the day, to acknowledge the tension you are carrying, and to allow the herb’s gentle, steady power to help you let go.

FAQs

Why is it so bitter?

That bitterness is the "trigger". In traditional herbalism, the bitter taste is essential—it signals the body to relax the nervous system and simultaneously stimulates the liver and digestive enzymes to do their work.

Is this like Skullcap?

Skullcap is for "frayed" nerves; Vervain is for "tight" or "rigid" nerves. If you feel like a coiled spring, Vervain is the perfect choice.

Can I mix this with other herbs?

It blends wonderfully with Chamomile to soften its intense bitter edge or with Lemon Balm for a "joyful release" blend that works on both the nerves and the heart.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HERBS

infusion

Infusion (The Gentle Extract)

Best For: Flowers, leaves, and aerial parts.
Method: Steeping in hot (not boiling) water.
Goal: Preserves delicate oils and nutrients.
Feel: Mild, aromatic, and nourishing.
Think of this as an elevated tea ritual. Because leaves and flowers are delicate, boiling them can damage their beneficial essential oils and volatile compounds.

The Method:
  • Pour hot (approx. 85°C–90°C) water over your herbs.
  • The Time: Cover and steep for 5–15 minutes. Covering is key—it prevents the plant's aromatic oils from escaping with the steam.
  • Best For: Chamomile, Lemon Balm, and delicate floral blends.

Cold infusions

Herbs best suited for cold infusions are those high in mucilage (like marshmallow root) or those with delicate, volatile oils (like peppermint and lemon balm). Steeping these in cold water overnight extracts their maximum benefits and flavours while preventing bitterness and preserving sensitive phytonutrients.

How to Prepare

Prep: Use a ratio of 1 tablespoon of dried herb (or 2 tablespoons fresh) per 1 cup of cold, filtered water.
Steep: Combine in a glass jar, cover tightly, and leave at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 6 to 12 hours (overnight is ideal).
Strain: Strain out the herbs thoroughly before drinking, warm water can be added to the drink if warm liquids is your preference. Do not heat in microwave.

decoction

Decoction (The Deep Extract)

Best For: Roots, bark, seeds, and woody stems.
Method: Simmering in water over heat.
Goal: Softens tough fibres to release compounds.
Feel: Concentrated, earthy, and potent.

How to Prepare (The "Simmer")

This is a more intensive process for tougher materials. Roots, barks, and woody seeds are "locked" behind dense cell walls; a simple soak isn't enough to get the goodness out.
The Method: Place your herbs in a pot with cold water. Slowly bring it to a gentle boil, then lower the heat and simmer.
The Time: Simmer for 15–20 minutes. Keep the lid on to maintain the potency.
Best For: Yellow Dock, White Willow Bark, Wild Yam, and woody roots or dense seeds.

Herbal Poultice

  • Place the recommended amount of dried herbs into a bowl.
  • Add just enough boiling water to moisten the herbs, creating a thick paste.
  • Allow the mixture to cool until it is comfortably warm (not hot enough to burn the skin).
  • Spread the herbs evenly onto a clean piece of muslin, gauze, or cotton cloth and fold the cloth over to enclose the herbs.
  • Apply the warm poultice directly to the affected area for 15–30 minutes, or as needed.
  • Remove the poultice and discard the used herbs. Prepare a fresh poultice for each application.

Helpful Tips
Do not apply to broken skin, open wounds, or infected areas unless advised by a qualified healthcare practitioner. If irritation occurs, discontinue use immediately.
