Cleanse. Restore. Renew.

Sheep Sorrel (Rumex acetosella) is a cooling, nutrient-dense field herb traditionally used to purify the blood, dissipate internal heat, and support the body's natural elimination pathways when the system feels sluggish or overheated.

Why Sheep Sorrel?

  • The Great Cooler. Oxalic acid provides the herb's iconic tart flavour and is traditionally linked to its cleansing, system-moving action — the classic choice when the system feels overheated or bogged down.
  • Nutritive Blood Tonic. Chlorophyll supports the blood and promotes systemic oxygenation and vitality, while carotenoids and Vitamin C deliver foundational antioxidant protection for healthy, responsive skin.
  • Systemic-Cleansing Ally. Anthraquinones provide gentle, structured support for healthy elimination, helping the body maintain its natural processes of purification and internal flow.
  • The Revitalising Tonic. Bright, crisp, and deeply grounding — a refreshing daily cleansing herb that resolves congested, overheated states and restores a sense of clarity and renewed vitality.

Traditional Benefits

Rumex acetosella is a botanical legend of the wild. Classified in traditional herbalism as "cooling, drying, and nutritive", it is deeply respected for its specific affinity with the blood, the skin, and the body’s natural elimination pathways. It acts as a "purifier", helping to resolve sensations of internal sluggishness, inflammation, or "damp-heat" with its sharp, clean, and nutrient-dense energy.

Core Bioactive Markers:

  • Oxalic Acid: The "heart" of the Sheep Sorrel. This naturally occurring compound provides the plant’s iconic, tart, and refreshing flavour and is traditionally linked to its reputation as a cleansing, systemic "mover."
  • Chlorophyll: Offers a vibrant, green-energy profile that is traditionally valued for supporting the blood and promoting a sense of systemic oxygenation and vitality.
  • Carotenoids & Vitamin C: Provide foundational, antioxidant-rich support, helping to protect tissues from environmental stress and supporting healthy, responsive skin.
  • Anthraquinones: Offer a subtle, structured support that contributes to the herb's traditional status as a gentle, systemic tonic for healthy elimination.

Key Physiological Properties:

  • Systemic Purifier: Traditionally used to support the body’s innate ability to clear and refresh, fostering a sense of internal purity and ease.
  • Cooling Ally: Its refreshing nature helps to dissipate "internal heat," encouraging a state of crisp, clean, and balanced equilibrium.
  • Nutritive Tonic: Provides essential botanical nutrients that support overall vitality and systemic resilience.
  • Systemic Harmoniser: By cooling and purifying, it helps to resolve "congested-overheated" states, encouraging a state of vibrant, crisp, and fundamentally clean-moving equilibrium.

FAQs

Why does it taste so sour?

That tart, "sour" flavour is its signature! In herbal tradition, "sour" herbs are valued for their ability to stimulate the liver, kidneys, and digestive system, effectively "waking them up" to do their work more efficiently.

Is this an effective cleanser?

It is considered one of the classic, foundational cleansing herbs. Its ability to support the body's natural systems of elimination makes it a favourite for traditional "spring cleaning" routines.

Can I mix this with other herbs?

Yes, it is excellent. It pairs perfectly with Burdock Root or Dandelion for a comprehensive, "deep-cleansing" herbal infusion.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HERBS

infusion

Infusion (The Gentle Extract)

Best For: Flowers, leaves, and aerial parts.
Method: Steeping in hot (not boiling) water.
Goal: Preserves delicate oils and nutrients.
Feel: Mild, aromatic, and nourishing.
Think of this as an elevated tea ritual. Because leaves and flowers are delicate, boiling them can damage their beneficial essential oils and volatile compounds.

The Method:
  • Pour hot (approx. 85°C–90°C) water over your herbs.
  • The Time: Cover and steep for 5–15 minutes. Covering is key—it prevents the plant's aromatic oils from escaping with the steam.
  • Best For: Chamomile, Lemon Balm, and delicate floral blends.

Cold infusions

Herbs best suited for cold infusions are those high in mucilage (like marshmallow root) or those with delicate, volatile oils (like peppermint and lemon balm). Steeping these in cold water overnight extracts their maximum benefits and flavours while preventing bitterness and preserving sensitive phytonutrients.

How to Prepare

Prep: Use a ratio of 1 tablespoon of dried herb (or 2 tablespoons fresh) per 1 cup of cold, filtered water.
Steep: Combine in a glass jar, cover tightly, and leave at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 6 to 12 hours (overnight is ideal).
Strain: Strain out the herbs thoroughly before drinking, warm water can be added to the drink if warm liquids is your preference. Do not heat in microwave.

decoction

Decoction (The Deep Extract)

Best For: Roots, bark, seeds, and woody stems.
Method: Simmering in water over heat.
Goal: Softens tough fibres to release compounds.
Feel: Concentrated, earthy, and potent.

How to Prepare (The "Simmer")

This is a more intensive process for tougher materials. Roots, barks, and woody seeds are "locked" behind dense cell walls; a simple soak isn't enough to get the goodness out.
The Method: Place your herbs in a pot with cold water. Slowly bring it to a gentle boil, then lower the heat and simmer.
The Time: Simmer for 15–20 minutes. Keep the lid on to maintain the potency.
Best For: Yellow Dock, White Willow Bark, Wild Yam, and woody roots or dense seeds.

Herbal Poultice

  • Place the recommended amount of dried herbs into a bowl.
  • Add just enough boiling water to moisten the herbs, creating a thick paste.
  • Allow the mixture to cool until it is comfortably warm (not hot enough to burn the skin).
  • Spread the herbs evenly onto a clean piece of muslin, gauze, or cotton cloth and fold the cloth over to enclose the herbs.
  • Apply the warm poultice directly to the affected area for 15–30 minutes, or as needed.
  • Remove the poultice and discard the used herbs. Prepare a fresh poultice for each application.

Helpful Tips
Do not apply to broken skin, open wounds, or infected areas unless advised by a qualified healthcare practitioner. If irritation occurs, discontinue use immediately.
