Cleanse. Move. Release.

Senna Leaf (Senna alexandrina) is one of the world's most recognised traditional botanicals for digestive support — a potent, cooling herb that stimulates peristalsis, clears congestion, and restores rhythmic elimination when the system feels stalled.

Why Senna Leaves?

  • The Transit Accelerator. Sennosides — the heart of this herb — stimulate the natural muscular contractions of the large intestine, sparking movement and encouraging efficient, timely elimination when the system feels heavy or stuck.
  • Systemic-Cleansing Ally. Encourages the body's natural elimination pathways, resolving feelings of internal accumulation and heaviness and supporting a sense of purity and systemic lightness.
  • Focused Reset Support. Mucilage buffers the action of the sennosides to keep the process comfortable, while resins contribute a concentrated, grounding quality for targeted, short-term digestive rhythm support.
  • The Movement Tonic. Flavonoids provide antioxidant protection for the digestive linings during the cleansing process – assertive, reliable, and effective for those who need a purposeful nudge to restore digestive flow.

Traditional Benefits

Senna alexandrina is a cornerstone of traditional digestive herbalism. Classified in traditional herbalism as "cooling, drying, and purgative (cleansing)", it is deeply respected for its specific affinity with the large intestine. It acts as an "initiator of movement", helping to resolve sensations of heaviness, constipation, or digestive "jamming" with its direct, persistent energy.

Core Bioactive Markers:

  • Sennosides (Anthraquinone Glycosides): The "heart" of the Senna Leaf. These compounds are the primary agents traditionally linked to the leaf’s reputation for stimulating peristalsis—the natural muscular contractions of the digestive tract—encouraging efficient and timely elimination.
  • Mucilage: Offers a soft, buffering quality that helps to balance the action of the sennosides, ensuring the digestive process remains comfortable.
  • Flavonoids: Provide foundational antioxidant support, helping to protect the digestive linings from environmental stress during the cleansing process.
  • Resins: Offer a concentrated, grounding quality that contributes to the herb's traditional status as a potent, results-oriented tonic for stagnant digestive states.

Key Physiological Properties:

  • Digestive Transit Stimulant: Traditionally used to spark movement when the system feels "stalled", fostering a state of efficient, rhythmic release.
  • Systemic Cleanser: Encourages the body’s natural elimination pathways, supporting a sense of purity and internal lightness.
  • Congestion Clearer: Its direct action helps to dissipate deep-seated feelings of heaviness and "internal accumulation", fostering a state of systemic clarity.
  • Systemic Harmoniser: By cooling and moving, it helps to resolve "heavy-stagnant" states, encouraging a state of vibrant, active, and fundamentally rhythmic equilibrium.

Therapeutic Benefits at a Glance

Transit Movement

Ignites rhythmic flow in the digestive tract.

Internal Cleansing

Promotes purity by clearing accumulation.

Digestion Reset

A focused, intense "reset" for stagnant states.

Systemic Lightness

Resolves feelings of "heavy" internal sluggishness.

Reliability

A classic, time-tested tonic for digestive ease.

How To Use

  • Infusion: Leaves and pods: Steep the dried leaves, 1 teaspoon or 3-6 pods in warm water for 10 – 15min. Strain and drink three times per day.
  • Cold infusion: Steep in cold water for 6 – 8 hours.
  • The Ritual: Best used as a "Reset Ritual." Using Senna is an act of listening to your body’s need for release. It is a moment to recognise when you are feeling "blocked" or heavy, and to offer your body the focused, traditional support it needs to return to a state of balance and flow.

Safety & Precautions

• Do not use for longer than 10 days. Always remember that constipation is the cause of something else, and this should be sought and dealt with. Habitual use will cause lazy bowel syndrome.
• Do not use if pregnant or lactating.
• Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
• Keep out of reach of children.
FAQs

Can I use this every day?

No. Senna is a stimulant that works best as an occasional, short-term tool. It is not intended for long-term daily use, as the body can become overly reliant on it.

Why does it take a few hours to work?

Senna works by interacting with the large intestine. Because it needs to pass through the digestive tract to be activated by the natural bacteria in the gut, there is a natural delay of 6–12 hours.

Is it best to take it in the morning or at night?

Most people find it most convenient to take it in the evening so that its natural, effective action supports the body’s morning rhythm.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HERBS

infusion

Infusion (The Gentle Extract)

Best For: Flowers, leaves, and aerial parts.
Method: Steeping in hot (not boiling) water.
Goal: Preserves delicate oils and nutrients.
Feel: Mild, aromatic, and nourishing.
Think of this as an elevated tea ritual. Because leaves and flowers are delicate, boiling them can damage their beneficial essential oils and volatile compounds.

The Method:
  • Pour hot (approx. 85°C–90°C) water over your herbs.
  • The Time: Cover and steep for 5–15 minutes. Covering is key—it prevents the plant's aromatic oils from escaping with the steam.
  • Best For: Chamomile, Lemon Balm, and delicate floral blends.

Cold infusions

Herbs best suited for cold infusions are those high in mucilage (like marshmallow root) or those with delicate, volatile oils (like peppermint and lemon balm). Steeping these in cold water overnight extracts their maximum benefits and flavours while preventing bitterness and preserving sensitive phytonutrients.

How to Prepare

Prep: Use a ratio of 1 tablespoon of dried herb (or 2 tablespoons fresh) per 1 cup of cold, filtered water.
Steep: Combine in a glass jar, cover tightly, and leave at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 6 to 12 hours (overnight is ideal).
Strain: Strain out the herbs thoroughly before drinking, warm water can be added to the drink if warm liquids is your preference. Do not heat in microwave.

decoction

Decoction (The Deep Extract)

Best For: Roots, bark, seeds, and woody stems.
Method: Simmering in water over heat.
Goal: Softens tough fibres to release compounds.
Feel: Concentrated, earthy, and potent.

How to Prepare (The "Simmer")

This is a more intensive process for tougher materials. Roots, barks, and woody seeds are "locked" behind dense cell walls; a simple soak isn't enough to get the goodness out.
The Method: Place your herbs in a pot with cold water. Slowly bring it to a gentle boil, then lower the heat and simmer.
The Time: Simmer for 15–20 minutes. Keep the lid on to maintain the potency.
Best For: Yellow Dock, White Willow Bark, Wild Yam, and woody roots or dense seeds.

Herbal Poultice

  • Place the recommended amount of dried herbs into a bowl.
  • Add just enough boiling water to moisten the herbs, creating a thick paste.
  • Allow the mixture to cool until it is comfortably warm (not hot enough to burn the skin).
  • Spread the herbs evenly onto a clean piece of muslin, gauze, or cotton cloth and fold the cloth over to enclose the herbs.
  • Apply the warm poultice directly to the affected area for 15–30 minutes, or as needed.
  • Remove the poultice and discard the used herbs. Prepare a fresh poultice for each application.

Helpful Tips
Do not apply to broken skin, open wounds, or infected areas unless advised by a qualified healthcare practitioner. If irritation occurs, discontinue use immediately.
