Breathe. Clear. Restore.

Pulmonaria officinalis is a cooling, mucilaginous herb traditionally used in European herbalism to soothe dry, irritated airways and support comfortable breathing during times of respiratory challenge.

Why Lungwort?

  • Respiratory soother. Lungwort's mucilage coats and moisturises the respiratory tract, providing gentle, sustained relief from dry, scratchy airways and easing dry coughs without harsh intervention.
  • Systemic comfort. Its cooling, mucilaginous nature helps dissipate internal dryness, fostering a sense of comfort and hydration throughout the respiratory system.
  • Astringent balance. Tannins provide a mild complementary astringency that tones and firms the delicate linings of the lungs and throat, supporting their natural structural health.
  • Gentle guardian. Trace saponins support the clearance of excess mucus, while flavonoids provide foundational antioxidant protection for seasonal resilience.

Traditional Benefits

Pulmonaria officinalis is a botanical cornerstone of traditional European wellness. Classified in traditional herbalism as "cooling, moistening, and mildly astringent," it is deeply respected for its specific affinity with the respiratory system. It is often regarded as a "protective" herb, helping to support the body’s natural ability to maintain clear, comfortable airways.

Core Bioactive Markers:

  • Mucilage: The "heart" of Lungwort. These complex polysaccharides are the primary agents responsible for the herb's signature ability to coat, moisturise, and soothe dry or irritated tissues throughout the respiratory tract.
  • Tannins: Provide a mild, gentle astringency that supports the health and tone of the delicate linings of the lungs and throat.
  • Flavonoids: Provide foundational antioxidant support and contribute to the plant's traditional use in maintaining systemic health and resilience against environmental stressors.
  • Saponins: Present in trace amounts, these compounds are traditionally associated with the herb’s ability to support the clearance of excess mucus, promoting a feeling of lightness and openness.

Key Physiological Properties:

  • Respiratory Soother: Traditionally used to calm throat irritation, ease dry coughs, and support overall airway comfort.
  • Systemic Moisturiser: Its cooling, mucilaginous nature helps to dissipate "dryness" within the body, fostering a sense of comfort and hydration.
  • Tissue Support: Its mild astringency helps to tone and firm the tissues of the respiratory system, supporting their natural structural health.
  • Seasonal Ally: A foundational tonic for maintaining respiratory harmony during times of seasonal change or environmental challenge.

How To Use

  • Infusion: Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 - 2 teaspoons of herb. Infuse for 10 - 15min. Strain and drink three times a day. It has a mild, earthy, and slightly vegetative flavour that is well-complemented by a touch of honey.
  • The Ritual: Best used as a "Deep Breath Ritual." Sipping a warm cup of Lungwort tea is a conscious invitation to breathe deeper. It is an intentional act of clearing, soothing, and protecting your respiratory centre—the very engine of your life force.

Safety & Precautions

• May cause contact dermatitis.
• Do not use if pregnant or lactating.
• Best used as a focused, traditional tonic during times of respiratory need rather than for long-term daily consumption.

• Keep out of reach of children.
FAQs

Does the plant really look like lungs?

Yes! The leaves are oval, slightly fuzzy, and often covered in white, lung-like spots. It is one of the most famous examples of the "Doctrine of Signatures" in herbal history.

Why is honey recommended?

Honey is a classic herbal partner for Lungwort. It adds its own demulcent (soothing) properties, making the tea even more effective at coating and calming a dry, tired throat.

Can I mix this with other herbs?

It blends exceptionally well with Mullein or Hyssop for a "respiratory powerhouse" infusion.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HERBS

infusion

Infusion (The Gentle Extract)

Best For: Flowers, leaves, and aerial parts.
Method: Steeping in hot (not boiling) water.
Goal: Preserves delicate oils and nutrients.
Feel: Mild, aromatic, and nourishing.
Think of this as an elevated tea ritual. Because leaves and flowers are delicate, boiling them can damage their beneficial essential oils and volatile compounds.

The Method:
  • Pour hot (approx. 85°C–90°C) water over your herbs.
  • The Time: Cover and steep for 5–15 minutes. Covering is key—it prevents the plant's aromatic oils from escaping with the steam.
  • Best For: Chamomile, Lemon Balm, and delicate floral blends.

Cold infusions

Herbs best suited for cold infusions are those high in mucilage (like marshmallow root) or those with delicate, volatile oils (like peppermint and lemon balm). Steeping these in cold water overnight extracts their maximum benefits and flavours while preventing bitterness and preserving sensitive phytonutrients.

How to Prepare

Prep: Use a ratio of 1 tablespoon of dried herb (or 2 tablespoons fresh) per 1 cup of cold, filtered water.
Steep: Combine in a glass jar, cover tightly, and leave at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 6 to 12 hours (overnight is ideal).
Strain: Strain out the herbs thoroughly before drinking, warm water can be added to the drink if warm liquids is your preference. Do not heat in microwave.

decoction

Decoction (The Deep Extract)

Best For: Roots, bark, seeds, and woody stems.
Method: Simmering in water over heat.
Goal: Softens tough fibres to release compounds.
Feel: Concentrated, earthy, and potent.

How to Prepare (The "Simmer")

This is a more intensive process for tougher materials. Roots, barks, and woody seeds are "locked" behind dense cell walls; a simple soak isn't enough to get the goodness out.
The Method: Place your herbs in a pot with cold water. Slowly bring it to a gentle boil, then lower the heat and simmer.
The Time: Simmer for 15–20 minutes. Keep the lid on to maintain the potency.
Best For: Yellow Dock, White Willow Bark, Wild Yam, and woody roots or dense seeds.

Herbal Poultice

  • Place the recommended amount of dried herbs into a bowl.
  • Add just enough boiling water to moisten the herbs, creating a thick paste.
  • Allow the mixture to cool until it is comfortably warm (not hot enough to burn the skin).
  • Spread the herbs evenly onto a clean piece of muslin, gauze, or cotton cloth and fold the cloth over to enclose the herbs.
  • Apply the warm poultice directly to the affected area for 15–30 minutes, or as needed.
  • Remove the poultice and discard the used herbs. Prepare a fresh poultice for each application.

Helpful Tips
Do not apply to broken skin, open wounds, or infected areas unless advised by a qualified healthcare practitioner. If irritation occurs, discontinue use immediately.
