Tone. Soothe. Settle.

Blackberry Leaves (Rubus fruticosus), a hidden treasure of the hedgerows, are a classic traditional tonic used to soothe and tone the digestive tract, calm irritated mucosal tissues, and restore internal balance when the system feels loose, unsettled, or out of rhythm.

Why Blackberry Leaves?

  • Digestive Toner. Condensed tannins — the heart of this herb — provide the astringency needed to calm and bind a loose or hyper-active digestive system, soothing the gut lining and promoting firm, settled comfort.
  • Astringent Power. Flavonoids (quercetin and kaempferol) deliver antioxidant protection for the gastrointestinal lining, shielding delicate mucosal tissues from oxidative stress and irritation.
  • Systemic Calm. Organic acids maintain a balanced internal environment and support the body's own digestive rhythm, while Vitamin C and minerals provide gentle bioavailable nourishment for natural repair.
  • Gentle Defence. A stabilising tonic that tones tissues and helps the body find its natural equilibrium — grounding, restorative, and reliable for ongoing digestive and systemic maintenance.

Traditional Benefits

Rubus fruticosus leaves have been used for centuries across many traditional cultures. Their therapeutic power lies in their rich concentration of plant-based tannins—natural compounds that provide an "astringent" effect, which in traditional terms means they help the body's tissues regain their natural tone and barrier function.

Core Bioactive Markers:

  • Condensed Tannins (Tannic Acid): These are the key to the leaf's medicinal profile, providing the astringency needed to soothe and "tighten" irritated tissues.
  • Flavonoids (Quercetin & Kaempferol): Provide antioxidant protection, shielding the gastrointestinal lining from oxidative stress and irritation.
  • Organic Acids: Assist in maintaining a balanced internal environment, supporting the body’s own digestive rhythm.
  • Vitamin C & Minerals: Provide gentle, bioavailable nourishment that supports the body's natural repair processes.

Key Physiological Properties:

  • Digestive Astringent: Traditionally used to calm and "bind" a loose or hyper-active digestive system, providing relief and promoting comfort.
  • Mucosal Support: Helps to soothe and protect the delicate mucous membranes of the mouth, throat, and gut.
  • Internal Balancing: Its ability to "tone" tissues makes it an excellent tonic for those looking to bring order back to a system that feels unsettled.
  • Systemic Stabiliser: By acting as a gentle tonic, it helps the body find its natural equilibrium, making it a reliable botanical for ongoing maintenance.

  • Infusion: 1-2 teaspoons of dried herb in 1 cup of boiling water. Infuse for 10-15min. Drink two to three times per day.
  • The Ritual: Best used as a "Settling Ritual." If you feel your digestion is "loose" or unsettled, a warm cup of Blackberry Leaf tea provides a grounding, restorative anchor to help you find your centre again.

Safety & Precautions

• Generally very safe; however, due to the high tannin content, it is best enjoyed as needed rather than as an indefinite daily beverage.
• Do not use if pregnant or lactating.

• Keep out of reach of children.
FAQs

Why does it feel "dry" in my mouth?

That dryness is the feeling of the tannins at work! It is that exact same property that makes it so effective at "toning" the digestive tract internally.

Is this the same as the fruit?

While the fruit is famous for its sweet flavour, the leaves are where the "tonic" and "astringent" medicine is concentrated. It’s a completely different (and highly useful) botanical experience.

Can I mix this with other herbs?

Yes, it blends beautifully. For a digestive-support blend, try it with a pinch of peppermint or fennel.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HERBS

infusion

Infusion (The Gentle Extract)

Best For: Flowers, leaves, and aerial parts.
Method: Steeping in hot (not boiling) water.
Goal: Preserves delicate oils and nutrients.
Feel: Mild, aromatic, and nourishing.
Think of this as an elevated tea ritual. Because leaves and flowers are delicate, boiling them can damage their beneficial essential oils and volatile compounds.

The Method:
  • Pour hot (approx. 85°C–90°C) water over your herbs.
  • The Time: Cover and steep for 5–15 minutes. Covering is key—it prevents the plant's aromatic oils from escaping with the steam.
  • Best For: Chamomile, Lemon Balm, and delicate floral blends.

Cold infusions

Herbs best suited for cold infusions are those high in mucilage (like marshmallow root) or those with delicate, volatile oils (like peppermint and lemon balm). Steeping these in cold water overnight extracts their maximum benefits and flavours while preventing bitterness and preserving sensitive phytonutrients.

How to Prepare

Prep: Use a ratio of 1 tablespoon of dried herb (or 2 tablespoons fresh) per 1 cup of cold, filtered water.
Steep: Combine in a glass jar, cover tightly, and leave at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 6 to 12 hours (overnight is ideal).
Strain: Strain out the herbs thoroughly before drinking, warm water can be added to the drink if warm liquids is your preference. Do not heat in microwave.

decoction

Decoction (The Deep Extract)

Best For: Roots, bark, seeds, and woody stems.
Method: Simmering in water over heat.
Goal: Softens tough fibres to release compounds.
Feel: Concentrated, earthy, and potent.

How to Prepare (The "Simmer")

This is a more intensive process for tougher materials. Roots, barks, and woody seeds are "locked" behind dense cell walls; a simple soak isn't enough to get the goodness out.
The Method: Place your herbs in a pot with cold water. Slowly bring it to a gentle boil, then lower the heat and simmer.
The Time: Simmer for 15–20 minutes. Keep the lid on to maintain the potency.
Best For: Yellow Dock, White Willow Bark, Wild Yam, and woody roots or dense seeds.

Herbal Poultice

  • Place the recommended amount of dried herbs into a bowl.
  • Add just enough boiling water to moisten the herbs, creating a thick paste.
  • Allow the mixture to cool until it is comfortably warm (not hot enough to burn the skin).
  • Spread the herbs evenly onto a clean piece of muslin, gauze, or cotton cloth and fold the cloth over to enclose the herbs.
  • Apply the warm poultice directly to the affected area for 15–30 minutes, or as needed.
  • Remove the poultice and discard the used herbs. Prepare a fresh poultice for each application.

Helpful Tips
Do not apply to broken skin, open wounds, or infected areas unless advised by a qualified healthcare practitioner. If irritation occurs, discontinue use immediately.
