Invigorate. Protect. Radiate.

Hibiscus sabdariffa is nature’s ruby-red powerhouse — an anthocyanin-rich cooling botanical celebrated globally for supporting cardiovascular health, fluid balance, and a glowing, radiant complexion.

Why Hibiscus Flowers?

  • Cardiovascular ally: Anthocyanins and polyphenols are the primary agents traditionally linked to supporting healthy blood pressure and heart resilience – a cornerstone of heart-centred wellness across global herbal traditions.
  • Antioxidant powerhouse: Deep red anthocyanins flood the body with robust antioxidant defence against oxidative stress and cellular ageing, while organic acids (citric, malic, and tartaric) gently stimulate digestive and metabolic function.
  • Radiant complexion: High Vitamin C and polyphenol content support collagen synthesis, helping to maintain skin elasticity, firmness, and a clear, healthy glow from the inside out.
  • Metabolic mover: Gentle diuretic properties support fluid balance and healthy elimination, fostering a sense of internal lightness and systemic cooling equilibrium.

Traditional Benefits

Hibiscus sabdariffa is a botanical icon. In traditional herbalism, it is classified as "cooling and sour". It is deeply respected for its specific affinity with the blood and the skin—acting as a refreshing catalyst for movement and brightness throughout the body's systems.

Core Bioactive Markers:

  • Anthocyanins: These deep red pigments are the "stars" of the hibiscus flower; they are the primary antioxidants responsible for the herb's traditional reputation for supporting heart health and cellular vitality.
  • Organic Acids (Citric, Malic, Tartaric): These give the tea its characteristic tartness and act as gentle digestive and metabolic stimulants, supporting healthy gut function.
  • Vitamin C: A foundational nutrient that contributes to the herb’s traditional use in supporting immune resilience and healthy, firm, glowing skin.
  • Polyphenols: Provide the broad-spectrum antioxidant protection that makes Hibiscus a classic "longevity" tonic for the cardiovascular system.

Key Physiological Properties:

  • Heart-Health Support: Traditionally used to help maintain healthy blood pressure and support the elasticity of the cardiovascular system.
  • Skin Vitaliser: Its high antioxidant and Vitamin C content are traditionally linked to collagen support, helping to maintain a firm, youthful, and clear complexion.
  • Fluid Balancer: By supporting gentle elimination, it helps the body manage fluid retention, leaving you feeling light and energised.
  • Cooling Equilibrator: Traditionally used to dissipate "internal heat," making it a perfect tonic for hot days or when the system feels overwhelmed by stress.

How To Use

  • How to Use: Because these are dried, fleshy calyces, they are best prepared as a long-steeped infusion. Use 1–2 teaspoons per cup of hot water and let steep for 10–15 minutes. It has a robust, tart, cranberry-like flavour that is delicious both hot and as an iced tea.
  • The Ritual: Best utilised as a "Vitality Ritual." Drinking Hibiscus tea is an act of flushing out the old and inviting the new. It is a moment to feel the sharp, invigorating tartness "wake up" your system, reminding you of the power of vibrant, plant-based medicine.

Safety & Precautions

• Do not use if pregnant or lactating.
• Due to its ability to influence blood pressure, those currently on blood pressure medication should consult their doctor before regular use.
• Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
• Keep out of reach of children.
FAQs

Does it have caffeine?

No, it is naturally caffeine-free! That "zing" you feel is simply the tart, invigorating nature of the botanical acids and plant compounds.

Is it only for iced tea?

While it is famous as a summer refresher, it is excellent served hot! When hot, its tartness is balanced by a deep, earthy body that is perfect for a midday pick-me-up.

Can I mix this with other herbs?

It is a phenomenal blender. It pairs beautifully with Rose Hips or Lemongrass for a "Circulatory Support" tea that tastes as good as it works.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HERBS

infusion

Infusion (The Gentle Extract)

Best For: Flowers, leaves, and aerial parts.
Method: Steeping in hot (not boiling) water.
Goal: Preserves delicate oils and nutrients.
Feel: Mild, aromatic, and nourishing.
Think of this as an elevated tea ritual. Because leaves and flowers are delicate, boiling them can damage their beneficial essential oils and volatile compounds.

The Method:
  • Pour hot (approx. 85°C–90°C) water over your herbs.
  • The Time: Cover and steep for 5–15 minutes. Covering is key—it prevents the plant's aromatic oils from escaping with the steam.
  • Best For: Chamomile, Lemon Balm, and delicate floral blends.

Cold infusions

Herbs best suited for cold infusions are those high in mucilage (like marshmallow root) or those with delicate, volatile oils (like peppermint and lemon balm). Steeping these in cold water overnight extracts their maximum benefits and flavours while preventing bitterness and preserving sensitive phytonutrients.

How to Prepare

Prep: Use a ratio of 1 tablespoon of dried herb (or 2 tablespoons fresh) per 1 cup of cold, filtered water.
Steep: Combine in a glass jar, cover tightly, and leave at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 6 to 12 hours (overnight is ideal).
Strain: Strain out the herbs thoroughly before drinking, warm water can be added to the drink if warm liquids is your preference. Do not heat in microwave.

decoction

Decoction (The Deep Extract)

Best For: Roots, bark, seeds, and woody stems.
Method: Simmering in water over heat.
Goal: Softens tough fibres to release compounds.
Feel: Concentrated, earthy, and potent.

How to Prepare (The "Simmer")

This is a more intensive process for tougher materials. Roots, barks, and woody seeds are "locked" behind dense cell walls; a simple soak isn't enough to get the goodness out.
The Method: Place your herbs in a pot with cold water. Slowly bring it to a gentle boil, then lower the heat and simmer.
The Time: Simmer for 15–20 minutes. Keep the lid on to maintain the potency.
Best For: Yellow Dock, White Willow Bark, Wild Yam, and woody roots or dense seeds.

Herbal Poultice

  • Place the recommended amount of dried herbs into a bowl.
  • Add just enough boiling water to moisten the herbs, creating a thick paste.
  • Allow the mixture to cool until it is comfortably warm (not hot enough to burn the skin).
  • Spread the herbs evenly onto a clean piece of muslin, gauze, or cotton cloth and fold the cloth over to enclose the herbs.
  • Apply the warm poultice directly to the affected area for 15–30 minutes, or as needed.
  • Remove the poultice and discard the used herbs. Prepare a fresh poultice for each application.

Helpful Tips
Do not apply to broken skin, open wounds, or infected areas unless advised by a qualified healthcare practitioner. If irritation occurs, discontinue use immediately.
