Bitter. Purify. Restore.

Quassia amara — one of nature's most potent bitters, traditionally used to support digestive vigour, stimulate bile flow, and maintain a clean, balanced internal environment.

Why Quassia Chips?

  • The bitter advantage — Intensely bitter quassinoids work instantly on the tongue's receptors to stimulate digestive enzymes and bile flow, making this one of the most powerful digestive activators in the traditional apothecary.
  • Internal purification — Traditionally used to support the body's natural defences against unwanted internal organisms, promoting a clean and balanced internal environment.
  • High bioavailability — Steeping the chips releases quassinoids into a liquid form the digestive tract can easily identify and utilise for immediate therapeutic effect.
  • Scalp & skin wellness — A cooled Quassia infusion makes an effective natural hair rinse to support scalp health and vitality.

Traditional Benefits

Quassia has been a staple in traditional herbalism, particularly in the Caribbean and Europe, for centuries. In the apothecary, it is classified as a bitter tonic, choleretic, and digestive stimulant. It is valued for its rich profile of quassinoids—among the most bitter compounds known to science—which are the primary drivers of its potent, system-activating effects.

Key Physiological Properties:

  • Bitter Tonic: Sparks the digestive fire and activates the entire GI tract.
  • Choleretic: Promotes robust bile flow, essential for optimal fat digestion.
  • Digestive Catalyst: Overcomes digestive sluggishness and metabolic stagnation.

Therapeutic Benefits at a Glance

Deep Activation

Ignites the digestive process from the very first sip.

Bile Stimulation

Enhances fat emulsification and liver function.

Metabolic Reset

Clears the "heaviness" of overindulgence.

Internal Cleanliness

Supports a balanced and vibrant internal terrain.

How To Use

  • How to Use: Quassia is extremely potent. Do not use large amounts. The traditional method is to add a very small amount of chips to water and let them infuse (a cold infusion is often best to keep the bitterness manageable). Drink a small "tonic shot" 15 minutes before meals.
  • The Ritual: Best utilised as an "Activation Ritual." Engaging with Quassia is an act of total systemic awakening. It is a moment to intentionally reset your digestive rhythm, clear the pathways of your body, and invite a sense of intense clarity and purpose into your health journey.

Safety & Precautions

Safe when used orally in amounts commonly found in foods.
IMPORTANT: Because of its extreme potency, it is not for casual or long-term daily use. It is a specialised, intensive tonic. Avoid during pregnancy and if you have sensitive or ulcerated stomach tissues.
Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
Keep out of reach of children.
FAQs

Is it really that bitter?

It is arguably the most bitter herb in the entire apothecary. This is precisely why it is so effective; that signal on your tongue is the direct "on switch" for your digestive system.

How much should I use?

Start with just a few small chips. Less is often more with Quassia.

Can I mix this with other herbs?

It is best used as a standalone digestive catalyst. It is a "master" herb that works best when it is the primary focus of your tonic preparation.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HERBS

infusion

Infusion (The Gentle Extract)

Best For: Flowers, leaves, and aerial parts.
Method: Steeping in hot (not boiling) water.
Goal: Preserves delicate oils and nutrients.
Feel: Mild, aromatic, and nourishing.
Think of this as an elevated tea ritual. Because leaves and flowers are delicate, boiling them can damage their beneficial essential oils and volatile compounds.

The Method:
  • Pour hot (approx. 85°C–90°C) water over your herbs.
  • The Time: Cover and steep for 5–15 minutes. Covering is key—it prevents the plant's aromatic oils from escaping with the steam.
  • Best For: Chamomile, Lemon Balm, and delicate floral blends.

Cold infusions

Herbs best suited for cold infusions are those high in mucilage (like marshmallow root) or those with delicate, volatile oils (like peppermint and lemon balm). Steeping these in cold water overnight extracts their maximum benefits and flavours while preventing bitterness and preserving sensitive phytonutrients.

How to Prepare

Prep: Use a ratio of 1 tablespoon of dried herb (or 2 tablespoons fresh) per 1 cup of cold, filtered water.
Steep: Combine in a glass jar, cover tightly, and leave at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 6 to 12 hours (overnight is ideal).
Strain: Strain out the herbs thoroughly before drinking, warm water can be added to the drink if warm liquids is your preference. Do not heat in microwave.

decoction

Decoction (The Deep Extract)

Best For: Roots, bark, seeds, and woody stems.
Method: Simmering in water over heat.
Goal: Softens tough fibres to release compounds.
Feel: Concentrated, earthy, and potent.

How to Prepare (The "Simmer")

This is a more intensive process for tougher materials. Roots, barks, and woody seeds are "locked" behind dense cell walls; a simple soak isn't enough to get the goodness out.
The Method: Place your herbs in a pot with cold water. Slowly bring it to a gentle boil, then lower the heat and simmer.
The Time: Simmer for 15–20 minutes. Keep the lid on to maintain the potency.
Best For: Yellow Dock, White Willow Bark, Wild Yam, and woody roots or dense seeds.

Herbal Poultice

  • Place the recommended amount of dried herbs into a bowl.
  • Add just enough boiling water to moisten the herbs, creating a thick paste.
  • Allow the mixture to cool until it is comfortably warm (not hot enough to burn the skin).
  • Spread the herbs evenly onto a clean piece of muslin, gauze, or cotton cloth and fold the cloth over to enclose the herbs.
  • Apply the warm poultice directly to the affected area for 15–30 minutes, or as needed.
  • Remove the poultice and discard the used herbs. Prepare a fresh poultice for each application.

Helpful Tips
Do not apply to broken skin, open wounds, or infected areas unless advised by a qualified healthcare practitioner. If irritation occurs, discontinue use immediately.
