Rest. Calm. Digest.

Humulus lupulus is a lupulin-rich resinous botanical traditionally used to quiet the mind, soothe nervous excitability, and usher in deep, restorative sleep for those who struggle to switch off.

Why Hops?

  • Nervine sedative & sleep support: Lupulin (humulone and lupulone) provides traditional sedative and hypnotic properties, shortening the time to fall asleep and enhancing the depth of rest.
  • Nervous system calm: Essential oils (myrcene and humulene) and bitter principles dampen nervous excitability, reduce anxiety, and dissolve the wired feeling of chronic stress and mental overactivity.
  • Digestive bitter tonic: Its bitter profile stimulates digestive enzyme flow, particularly helpful for those whose digestion is negatively impacted by stress, worry, or tension.
  • Cooling equilibrator: Traditionally used to dissipate internal heat and agitation, fostering cool, grounded composure — a profound ally for deep physical and mental restoration.

Traditional Benefits

Humulus lupulus is a botanical icon. In traditional herbalism, it is classified as "cool, bitter, and drying." It is deeply respected for its specific affinity with the nervous system—acting as a sedative, hypnotic, and stomachic that helps to bridge the gap between mental activity and physical rest.

Core Bioactive Markers:

  • Lupulin: The golden, resinous powder found within the hop cones is the heart of the herb. It contains the primary constituents—humulone and lupulone—that give Hops their traditional sedative and bitter properties.
  • Bitter Principles: These compounds not only support the digestive system by stimulating enzymatic flow but also play a role in the herb's overall effect of "dampening" nervous excitability.
  • Essential Oils (Myrcene & Humulene): These aromatic oils provide the signature fragrance and contribute to the plant's traditional ability to calm the mind and soothe physical tension.
  • Flavonoids: Foundational antioxidants that support the body's overall systemic resilience and provide a gentle, protective influence during periods of stress.

Key Physiological Properties:

  • Nervine Sedative: Traditionally used to reduce anxiety, nervous restlessness, and muscle tension associated with stress.
  • Sleep Inducer: Acts as a classic hypnotic to shorten the time it takes to fall asleep and enhance the depth of rest.
  • Digestive Tonic: Its bitterness stimulates the digestive juices, making it helpful for those whose digestion is negatively impacted by stress or worry.
  • Cooling Equilibrator: Traditionally used to dissipate "internal heat" and agitation, fostering a sense of cool, calm composure.

How To Use

  • Infusion: Pour a cup of boiling water over 1 teaspoon of the herb. Stand for 10-15min. Drink 1 cup at night to induce sleep. This dose might be strengthened if needed.
  • The Ritual: Best used as a "Sleep-Induction Ritual." About an hour before you wish to sleep, prepare a cup of Hops-based tea as part of your "unwinding" routine. As you sip it, let the heavy, aromatic warmth signal to your body that the day is finished and it is time for deep restoration.

Safety & Precautions

• Hops have a strong sedative effect. Do not consume before driving or operating heavy machinery.
• Avoid if you are currently experiencing depression, as their heavy, sedative nature can sometimes intensify this state.
• Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
• Keep out of reach of children.
FAQs

Why are they so bitter?

The bitterness comes from the same resins that provide the relaxing effects! If you find it too bitter on its own, blend it with soothing, floral herbs like Chamomile or Lavender to balance the flavour.

Are these the same Hops used in beer?

Yes, exactly! They are the same plant, but in herbalism, we focus on their concentrated sedative properties for rest rather than their flavour profile for brewing.

Can I use this for long-term sleep issues?

It is an excellent tool for acute, short-term support during times of high stress, but sleep issues are best addressed holistically.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HERBS

infusion

Infusion (The Gentle Extract)

Best For: Flowers, leaves, and aerial parts.
Method: Steeping in hot (not boiling) water.
Goal: Preserves delicate oils and nutrients.
Feel: Mild, aromatic, and nourishing.
Think of this as an elevated tea ritual. Because leaves and flowers are delicate, boiling them can damage their beneficial essential oils and volatile compounds.

The Method:
  • Pour hot (approx. 85°C–90°C) water over your herbs.
  • The Time: Cover and steep for 5–15 minutes. Covering is key—it prevents the plant's aromatic oils from escaping with the steam.
  • Best For: Chamomile, Lemon Balm, and delicate floral blends.

Cold infusions

Herbs best suited for cold infusions are those high in mucilage (like marshmallow root) or those with delicate, volatile oils (like peppermint and lemon balm). Steeping these in cold water overnight extracts their maximum benefits and flavours while preventing bitterness and preserving sensitive phytonutrients.

How to Prepare

Prep: Use a ratio of 1 tablespoon of dried herb (or 2 tablespoons fresh) per 1 cup of cold, filtered water.
Steep: Combine in a glass jar, cover tightly, and leave at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 6 to 12 hours (overnight is ideal).
Strain: Strain out the herbs thoroughly before drinking, warm water can be added to the drink if warm liquids is your preference. Do not heat in microwave.

decoction

Decoction (The Deep Extract)

Best For: Roots, bark, seeds, and woody stems.
Method: Simmering in water over heat.
Goal: Softens tough fibres to release compounds.
Feel: Concentrated, earthy, and potent.

How to Prepare (The "Simmer")

This is a more intensive process for tougher materials. Roots, barks, and woody seeds are "locked" behind dense cell walls; a simple soak isn't enough to get the goodness out.
The Method: Place your herbs in a pot with cold water. Slowly bring it to a gentle boil, then lower the heat and simmer.
The Time: Simmer for 15–20 minutes. Keep the lid on to maintain the potency.
Best For: Yellow Dock, White Willow Bark, Wild Yam, and woody roots or dense seeds.

Herbal Poultice

  • Place the recommended amount of dried herbs into a bowl.
  • Add just enough boiling water to moisten the herbs, creating a thick paste.
  • Allow the mixture to cool until it is comfortably warm (not hot enough to burn the skin).
  • Spread the herbs evenly onto a clean piece of muslin, gauze, or cotton cloth and fold the cloth over to enclose the herbs.
  • Apply the warm poultice directly to the affected area for 15–30 minutes, or as needed.
  • Remove the poultice and discard the used herbs. Prepare a fresh poultice for each application.

Helpful Tips
Do not apply to broken skin, open wounds, or infected areas unless advised by a qualified healthcare practitioner. If irritation occurs, discontinue use immediately.
