Fuel. Nourish. Sustain.

Salvia hispanica — the legendary "running food" of the Aztec and Mayan tradition — is a complete nutritional tonic rich in alpha-linolenic acid, mucilaginous soluble fibre, and polyphenols, relied upon to provide sustained energy, soothe the digestive tract, and support heart, brain, and joint health.

Why Chia Seeds?

  • Sustained Energy: Mucilaginous fibre slows carbohydrate absorption, maintaining steady blood sugar and preventing energy crashes for long-lasting stamina and focus.
  • Digestive Harmony: Soluble fibre forms a soothing gel that coats the intestinal lining, supports healthy elimination, and promotes overall gut comfort.
  • Heart & Brain Support: Alpha-linolenic acid (Omega-3) provides foundational support for healthy inflammatory response, cardiovascular function, and cognitive health.
  • Hydration Retention: Hydrophilic seeds hold many times their weight in water, helping the body maintain optimal internal hydration and electrolyte balance.

Traditional Benefits

Salvia hispanica was once a staple of the Aztec and Mayan diet, where it was known as "running food" due to its legendary ability to support stamina. In traditional practice, Chia is revered not just as food, but as a "demulcent"—a herb that softens and protects internal tissues—and a vital tonic for keeping the body fuelled and grounded.

Core Bioactive Markers:

  • Alpha-Linolenic Acid (Omega-3): Essential fatty acids that support a healthy inflammatory response and provide foundational support for heart and brain health.
  • Soluble Fiber (Mucilage): This forms the "gel" when hydrated, which works to soothe the digestive lining and regulate the absorption of nutrients.
  • Complete Profile of Minerals: Provides a rich supply of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, essential for maintaining structural strength and energy metabolism.
  • Antioxidant Compounds: Contains quercetin, kaempferol, and other polyphenols that protect cells from the impact of daily oxidative stress.

Key Physiological Properties:

  • Sustained Energy: By slowing the absorption of carbohydrates, Chia helps maintain steady blood sugar levels already within the normal range, preventing the "crash" associated with modern snacks.
  • Digestive Harmony: The mucilaginous fibre acts as a gentle sweep for the intestines, supporting healthy elimination and overall gut comfort.
  • Hydration Retention: Being hydrophilic, Chia seeds can hold many times their weight in water, helping the body maintain a state of internal "plumpness" and hydration.
  • Systemic Nourishment: Provides the building blocks for healthy tissues, making it an ideal tonic for those who feel depleted or are looking to bolster their nutritional foundation.

How To Use

  • How to Use: Dry chia seeds can also be added whole or ground to smoothies and juices, mixed into yogurt and oatmeal, or sprinkled on top of a salad. If you're adding the seeds to a drink or a "wet" dish like porridge, they'll swell up slightly while you eat but retain a slight crunch.
  • The Ritual: The "Steady Foundation Ritual." Incorporating Chia into your day is a commitment to your body’s longevity. It is a quiet, reliable way to ensure you are fuelled, hydrated, and deeply nourished, helping you remain steady and vital regardless of the day's demands.

Safety & Precautions

• Generally safe for all. Because they expand significantly in water, always consume with adequate liquid.
• Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
• Keep out of reach of children.
FAQs

Do I need to grind these seeds to get the benefits?

Unlike flaxseeds, chia seeds have a porous outer shell; your body can fully access their nutrients even when consumed whole.

Why do they turn into a gel?

That gel is their "secret weapon"—it is highly hydrating and soothing to the digestive tract, which is exactly why they are so valued for gut support.

Can I use these for exercise performance?

Absolutely. They are a classic choice for sustained energy, providing a steady release of nutrients that makes them ideal for endurance or demanding days.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HERBS

infusion

Infusion (The Gentle Extract)

Best For: Flowers, leaves, and aerial parts.
Method: Steeping in hot (not boiling) water.
Goal: Preserves delicate oils and nutrients.
Feel: Mild, aromatic, and nourishing.
Think of this as an elevated tea ritual. Because leaves and flowers are delicate, boiling them can damage their beneficial essential oils and volatile compounds.

The Method:
  • Pour hot (approx. 85°C–90°C) water over your herbs.
  • The Time: Cover and steep for 5–15 minutes. Covering is key—it prevents the plant's aromatic oils from escaping with the steam.
  • Best For: Chamomile, Lemon Balm, and delicate floral blends.

Cold infusions

Herbs best suited for cold infusions are those high in mucilage (like marshmallow root) or those with delicate, volatile oils (like peppermint and lemon balm). Steeping these in cold water overnight extracts their maximum benefits and flavours while preventing bitterness and preserving sensitive phytonutrients.

How to Prepare

Prep: Use a ratio of 1 tablespoon of dried herb (or 2 tablespoons fresh) per 1 cup of cold, filtered water.
Steep: Combine in a glass jar, cover tightly, and leave at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 6 to 12 hours (overnight is ideal).
Strain: Strain out the herbs thoroughly before drinking, warm water can be added to the drink if warm liquids is your preference. Do not heat in microwave.

decoction

Decoction (The Deep Extract)

Best For: Roots, bark, seeds, and woody stems.
Method: Simmering in water over heat.
Goal: Softens tough fibres to release compounds.
Feel: Concentrated, earthy, and potent.

How to Prepare (The "Simmer")

This is a more intensive process for tougher materials. Roots, barks, and woody seeds are "locked" behind dense cell walls; a simple soak isn't enough to get the goodness out.
The Method: Place your herbs in a pot with cold water. Slowly bring it to a gentle boil, then lower the heat and simmer.
The Time: Simmer for 15–20 minutes. Keep the lid on to maintain the potency.
Best For: Yellow Dock, White Willow Bark, Wild Yam, and woody roots or dense seeds.

Herbal Poultice

  • Place the recommended amount of dried herbs into a bowl.
  • Add just enough boiling water to moisten the herbs, creating a thick paste.
  • Allow the mixture to cool until it is comfortably warm (not hot enough to burn the skin).
  • Spread the herbs evenly onto a clean piece of muslin, gauze, or cotton cloth and fold the cloth over to enclose the herbs.
  • Apply the warm poultice directly to the affected area for 15–30 minutes, or as needed.
  • Remove the poultice and discard the used herbs. Prepare a fresh poultice for each application.

Helpful Tips
Do not apply to broken skin, open wounds, or infected areas unless advised by a qualified healthcare practitioner. If irritation occurs, discontinue use immediately.
