Nourish. Strengthen. Protect.

Crataegus monogyna — an OPC-rich cardiotonic and vasodilator used for centuries in European apothecary traditions to support healthy blood flow, strengthen heart muscle function, and maintain the integrity of the vascular system.

Why Hawthorn Berries?

  • Circulatory support — OPCs strengthen the structural integrity of the heart muscle and blood vessels, while flavonoids (vitexin and quercetin) widen coronary arteries and increase oxygen delivery to the heart.
  • Enhanced bioavailability — Warm infusions unlock dense flavonoids from the berry skin, while triterpenoid acids support heart contractility and improve the efficiency of the heart's pumping action.
  • Heart-healthy antioxidants — OPCs scavenge free radicals in cardiovascular tissues, reducing long-term oxidative load and supporting the heart's resilience under physical and emotional stress.
  • Traditional longevity — Amines (tyramine and phenethylamine) contribute to Hawthorn's traditional use as a mild heart-centred nervine, calming anxiety and anchoring the nervous system.

Traditional Benefits

Crataegus monogyna (Hawthorn Berries) has been a sacred botanical in European apothecary traditions for centuries. In the apothecary, it is classified as a cardiac tonic, vasodilator, and nervine. Its therapeutic strength lies in its complex profile of bioactive compounds that work to enhance coronary blood flow and support the heart's resilience under physical and emotional stress.

Core Bioactive Markers:

  • Oligomeric Procyanidins (OPCs): These potent antioxidants are responsible for strengthening the structural integrity of the heart muscle and blood vessels.
  • Flavonoids (Vitexin & Quercetin): Act as powerful vasodilators, helping to widen coronary arteries, which increases oxygen delivery to the heart muscle.
  • Triterpenoid Acids: Support the heart's contractility and help improve the overall efficiency of the heart’s pumping action.
  • Amines (Tyramine & Phenethylamine): Trace compounds that contribute to the plant's traditional use as a mild, heart-centred nervine that helps soothe emotional anxiety.

Key Physiological Properties:

  • Cardiac Tonic: Increases the force of heart contractions (inotropy) and improves coronary circulation.
  • Vasodilator: Gently widens blood vessels to support healthy blood pressure and flow throughout the periphery.
  • Nervine: Calms heart-centred anxiety and emotional tension, anchoring the nervous system.
  • Protective Agent: Scavenges free radicals in the cardiovascular tissues, reducing long-term oxidative load.

Therapeutic Benefits at a Glance

Cardiovascular Flow

Supports healthy, rhythmic pumping and circulation.

Heart Resilience

Strengthens the heart muscle against stress.

Emotional Ease

Calms the 'fluttering' feelings of anxiety or worry.

How To Use

  • Infusion: 2 teaspoons of herb in 1 cup of boiled water, infuse for 10 - 15min. Drink three times per day. Only effective if taken for periods of 6 weeks.
  • The Ritual: Best utilised as a "Heart-Centring Ritual". Taking Hawthorn is an act of honouring your internal engine. It is a moment to breathe into the centre of your chest, acknowledge the work your heart does for you every day, and invite a sense of rhythmic calm and grounded safety into your entire being.

Safety & Precautions

• IMPORTANT: Hawthorn is a potent tonic for the heart. If you are already taking medication for heart conditions or blood pressure, consult your physician before adding Hawthorn to your regimen, as it may potentiate the effects of your medication.
• Do not give to children under 12 years old.
• Do not use if pregnant or lactating.
• Consult with a medical practitioner before use.
• Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
• Keep out of reach of children.
FAQs

Does it act like a "heart stimulant"?

Not in the way caffeine does. It is a tonic—it supports the heart’s own natural function, helping it beat more efficiently and resiliently, rather than just forcing it to work harder.

How long until I feel it working?

Like most long-term tonics, the benefits build over time. While some feel a subtle shift in mood relatively quickly, the deepest support for cardiovascular structure is built through consistent, daily use over 3–6 months.

Can I mix this with other herbs?

It pairs perfectly with Motherwort for an "Ultimate Heart & Nervous System" calming protocol.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HERBS

infusion

Infusion (The Gentle Extract)

Best For: Flowers, leaves, and aerial parts.
Method: Steeping in hot (not boiling) water.
Goal: Preserves delicate oils and nutrients.
Feel: Mild, aromatic, and nourishing.
Think of this as an elevated tea ritual. Because leaves and flowers are delicate, boiling them can damage their beneficial essential oils and volatile compounds.

The Method:
  • Pour hot (approx. 85°C–90°C) water over your herbs.
  • The Time: Cover and steep for 5–15 minutes. Covering is key—it prevents the plant's aromatic oils from escaping with the steam.
  • Best For: Chamomile, Lemon Balm, and delicate floral blends.

Cold infusions

Herbs best suited for cold infusions are those high in mucilage (like marshmallow root) or those with delicate, volatile oils (like peppermint and lemon balm). Steeping these in cold water overnight extracts their maximum benefits and flavours while preventing bitterness and preserving sensitive phytonutrients.

How to Prepare

Prep: Use a ratio of 1 tablespoon of dried herb (or 2 tablespoons fresh) per 1 cup of cold, filtered water.
Steep: Combine in a glass jar, cover tightly, and leave at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 6 to 12 hours (overnight is ideal).
Strain: Strain out the herbs thoroughly before drinking, warm water can be added to the drink if warm liquids is your preference. Do not heat in microwave.

decoction

Decoction (The Deep Extract)

Best For: Roots, bark, seeds, and woody stems.
Method: Simmering in water over heat.
Goal: Softens tough fibres to release compounds.
Feel: Concentrated, earthy, and potent.

How to Prepare (The "Simmer")

This is a more intensive process for tougher materials. Roots, barks, and woody seeds are "locked" behind dense cell walls; a simple soak isn't enough to get the goodness out.
The Method: Place your herbs in a pot with cold water. Slowly bring it to a gentle boil, then lower the heat and simmer.
The Time: Simmer for 15–20 minutes. Keep the lid on to maintain the potency.
Best For: Yellow Dock, White Willow Bark, Wild Yam, and woody roots or dense seeds.

Herbal Poultice

  • Place the recommended amount of dried herbs into a bowl.
  • Add just enough boiling water to moisten the herbs, creating a thick paste.
  • Allow the mixture to cool until it is comfortably warm (not hot enough to burn the skin).
  • Spread the herbs evenly onto a clean piece of muslin, gauze, or cotton cloth and fold the cloth over to enclose the herbs.
  • Apply the warm poultice directly to the affected area for 15–30 minutes, or as needed.
  • Remove the poultice and discard the used herbs. Prepare a fresh poultice for each application.

Helpful Tips
Do not apply to broken skin, open wounds, or infected areas unless advised by a qualified healthcare practitioner. If irritation occurs, discontinue use immediately.
